HCG Diet: What is HCG?

HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone that is naturally produced in the pituitary gland. Women produce a significant amount of HCG during pregnancy. Scientists have found that HCG protects the fetus in early stages of development by causing the mother's body to release and burn fat tissue. HCG causes the fat to be available as food for the fetus, if needed.

When HCG is present in the body and there is no fetus to consume the energy inherent in the released fat tissue, the fat tissue is excreted by the body.

The HCG diet has its roots in the work of the brilliant British endocrinologist Albert Simeons, who successfully treated overweight and obesity with the use of HCG. Simeons discovered that low does of HCG, in combination with a low calorie diet, caused significant weight loss. Not only did the HCG trigger weight loss, HCG specifically stimulated the loss of fat tissue, not a combination of fat tissue and muscle tissue, as is typically the case in calorie-restricted diets.

As Dr. Simeons states, "One of the functions of HCG is to stimulate the body to mobilize and burn extra fat cells for energy…. You do not lose muscle mass, which is what occurs in other diets."

HCG Diet: How Does the HCG Diet Work?

The HCG diet stimulates the hypothalamus in such a way that fat tissue is mobilized from fat storage in the body, making it available as energy to burn. Specifically, the HCG diet releases stores of "brown fat", that dense fat tissue that is commonly found in the abdomen, hips and thighs and is often the most difficult to lose. HCG converts this long-term (stored) brown fat into short-term (mobile) fat. This short-term fat can be used by the body as energy. Brown fat is not used as energy.


HCG Diet: The HCG Diet and Appetite

Essential to the HCG diet is the maintenance of a 500-calorie-a-day diet, also known as a "very low calorie diet" (VLCD). While some dieters may find this next to impossible to maintain without a sense of deprivation or intense hunger pangs, the HCG hormone actually curbs the appetite to such an extent that those on the HCG diet report a surprising lack of hunger despite the small food intake.

On the HCG diet, the HCG hormone releases 1,200 to 4,500 calories of fat tissue a day. The body uses these calories in place of food, and because there is a constant supply of calories while on the HCG diet, hunger is curbed.
